Would you like Barnardo’s to provide a totally free activity to children in your group? If so read on ……

KIDS COMMUNITY ACTION GROUPS

For the last two years Barnardo’s Voice and Influence Ambassador Service has delivered Community School Councils to schools all over the borough. This year we have changed the name of these workshops to Kids Community Action Groups. We are hoping to deliver four workshops to each of the 10 Wellbeing Areas of Barnsley and we are making them available to groups and organisations as well as schools. The workshops are suitable for children and young people aged 4 to 13 years.

The workshops will focus on four issues which children have highlighted in previous years, these are:

Personal Safety
Greenspaces
Health
Litter

The workshops will be two-part, each part being 2 hours in length. During the first session the children will work together on activities to help them decide where the problem areas are in their local community, such as areas where they play, where they go to school, etc, and decide, as a group, which of these they would most like to do something about and how they would like to go about it.

The second session will take place about three weeks later and will be a practical session when we will engage with other services to do something practical about the issue such as a litter pick or graffiti clean and also look at longer term solutions such as displaying posters, raising awareness, communication and meetings with council officers.

Costs

These workshops are totally free of cost to both you as an organisation and the children and young people involved!!!

Publicity

If you would like to take part and host one of our workshops we will send you posters to advertise this event. We will also, with your approval, publicise this in local schools and groups which may be beneficial in promoting what you are already doing in this area as well as publicising the event and the work of Barnardo’s Voices.

Patrol Leaders' Camp - 17/18th October

At the District Scout Section Meeting, held 21 September at Ardsley, it was decided to organise a training camp for PLs and APLs.

The camp will be held at Silverwood Scout Camp from 9am Saturday 17th to 12pm Sunday 18th - the District Cross Country event follows. The camp is open to existing and prospective Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders.

Each group is to supply equipment for one patrol to camp, including traditional Patrol Tent, Dining Shelter and gas cooker, dixies, utensils, etc. The intention is that the scouts will be placed in mixed patrols and left to set up their own campsite and prepare there own meals with guidance from leaders, who will camp separately. Cooking will be a mix of gas and open fire.

The camp fee has been set at £10pp, to cover food and camp fees. Letters and permission to camp forms will be available for download shortly.

Scout Section Meeting - 21st September

Following our first meeting it was agreed that we would have regular meetings so that we can keep on top of our planned events. We need to be looking at the Patrol Leaders weekend that we penciled in September/October, also it's on the calendar that we were to have a Scout Challenge.

Scout Section Meeting - 20th July

Patrol Camp, 4-6 September

We're planning a Patrol Camp for Ardsley Scouts, 4-6 September, probably at Silverwood. Just wondering if any other troops fancy taking part? The basic idea would be each patrol camps as a self-contained unit, with their own sleeping, dining and cooking arrangements. Leaders would camp separately to keep an eye on things, and run activities. The aim is to get them working effectively as a Patrol. There would ideally be a competitive aspect, maybe with a prize for the Patrol that gets the most points?

District Camp - Report

Here’s my report on the District Camp just gone.

Numbers

Excluding Leaders and Explorers, there were 155 campers, which splits down by Group as follows: Darfield 43, Hoyland Common 26, Wombwell 29, Hoyland 38, Ardsley 19. The section split was Beavers 45, Cubs 42, Scouts 68.

That’s an impressive turnout. I think 200plus is achievable next year, and I think we should plan on that basis. I would also suggest we start promoting the event earlier next year; I think we’ll get more going, and it will help with the planning if we can get a better idea of numbers 4 – 6 weeks before the event.

Programme

We were blessed with good weather this year, which always helps, but the programme was in the main successful too. Thanks to all the Leaders for all their hard work. Thanks to Mick for the ‘Scouts Own’, which I thought was pitched to perfection. Thanks to the Explorers who did a great job with the campfire and the assault course. It’s probably unfair to single out individuals but I thought George was excellent as campfire leader. Thanks to the Fellowship for organising the backwoods cooking. On the day they struggled to cope with the numbers of scouts, so if we do anything like that next year we need to run more than one session. Last but not least, thanks to Tim Hague for running the first aid competition for Scouts. He’s far too polite to say so, but on the whole I don’t think he was too impressed with their first aid skills, so maybe that’s something we can work on.

Finances

I haven’t received any further claims for expenses, so I assume everyone is sorted. So the final position is as follows: total income was £890, total expenditure was £461, leaving a surplus of £429, which I propose to redistribute to the Groups pro rata to the camp fees originally paid. You can find a spreadsheet of my working-out here, but I propose to refund the following amounts: Darfield £105.25, Hoyland Common £58.36, Wombwell £78.82, Hoyland £120.22 and Ardsley £66.35. The refund works out at just under 50% of the camp fees originally paid. I will bring the money to the next District Scouters’ Meeting.

Some groups spent more on food than the £8 allocated from the camp fee, I know we did, so I would say the split original agreed was wrong. When I’m budgeting for camps I work on £5.75 per 24-hours for food, so I’d normally have allocated £11.50 for food for this camp.

Camp fees were £300, which is worked out at just under £2pp. This is a fixed cost (providing we book the entire site) so the more go the lower the cost per person.

The activities expenses came to £161, which is just over £1pp – which wasn’t as much as I expected, but I supposed the ‘Back to Basics’ theme helped there. I think for next year we need to come up with a way of allocating the activities budget in advance so we do actually spend it.

Scout Athlete Badge

We need to decide what we're doing regarding the Scout Athlete Badge, which we're proposing to run on 28 June at Broomhill instead of the raft race. I think we said 1pm start time - can someone confirm that please? I don't mind doing a letter, once we've sorted out what we're doing. The 'official' Athlete badge events are:

200m Sprint
300m Female
400m Male
800m
1500m
High Jump
Long Jump
Shot
Discus
Cricket Ball

So we're going to need:

long tape measures
stop watches
something to mark out lanes, start and finish lines, etc

Not sure how we can do the high jump, unless anyone's got any thick bouldering mats(?), but if we are doing it we need a flexible cross bar and something to hold it up.

This would be a lot easier on a field that's already already marked up with a 400m track - anyone?

We need to know who we've got going leader-wise, and who's bringing what kit-wise.

Proposed merger of the three Barnsley Districts

Below is the text of a letter sent by Andy Moore, County Commissioner, on 8th June 2009 to all Group Scout Leaders and Scouters-in-Charge in Barnsley Central, Barnsley Pennine, and Barnsley Fitzwilliam districts. This was briefly discussed over the weekend in an ad hoc Exec meeting. GSLs have been asked to discuss this within their Groups prior to the next Exec Meeting on 6th July. The intention is that Exec meeting will come up with our considered response to the proposals:-

Dear Scouter,

I am writing to all Group Scout Leaders within the Barnsley Districts to inform you that a proposal has been put forward to evaluate changes to the Scout Boundaries within Barnsley. This was a proposal put forward from members of the movement in Barnsley as part of the search process to find a new DC for Barnsley Central and we also know that a new DC will be needed for Barnsley Fitzwilliam next year.

It was felt that because of this we should consider the option of the amalgamation of the three districts. The subject has been discussed with all three of the District Commissioners along with their Chairmen. It is felt that due to the decline in the number of groups within each district; the repeated resources of personnel time taken up for the three districts which could be better used to support Scouting for one area, that this was the right time to form a new district - Barnsley Metropolitan Scout Council.

Obviously this will need to be handled in the correct manner and this is the first part of the process to inform all groups at the same time. The subject will form part of the agenda at all three District Executive and Scouters meetings. The proposal will be to form a new district by the 1st April 2010 so planning/programmes need to be put in place that can be fulfilled and future plans discussed. The finances will also need to be kept in line with the Charity Commissioner accounting periods.

This proposal should only give added benefits to our Youth membership and there should be little change to the groups but I feel it will give added strengths when working as one district. If you or your Scouters have any queries regarding this - the subject will be on your meeting agendas as stated, but you can contact either me or your current DC's for information.

This is an open debate and we are willing to listen and answer and questions. Please let us continue to support Scouting in Barnsley together.

District Camp - Thanks

Thanks everyone for your efforts over the weekend. Don't know about you but I'm still exhausted! Anyway, everything seemed to go more or less according to plan, and you could tell that kids were having a good time, so I think we can all give ourselves a pat on the back. Job well done!

District Camp - Programme

NB. Can Scout Troops please bring their own ropes for pioneering, otherwise it could be a fairly short-lived activity!

As of last night's meeting we're expecting around 144 campers, which breaks down as follows: 46 Beavers, 35 Cubs, 51 Scouts, 12 Explorers. We're still awaiting Cub & Scout numbers from Wombwell so it could be more than that.

Money: Groups are to retain £8 for food for each camper, and £3 for each Beaver. The balance of £7/£2, respectively, is to be paid into the central camp fees/activities fund. If you're spending money on activities please supply receipts.

Scout First Aid Competition

Tim Hague has kindly agreed to run a First Aid competition for Scouts on the Saturday of the District Camp (13 June). The rules of the competition will be as follows:-

1/
Teams to consist of 4 - 6 members aged 10 years to 15th birthday on the date of the competition.

2/
The order in which teams will judged will be drawn prior to the competition and groups will be notified as to what time their team(s) need to arrive at the training hut.

3/
Each team will be allowed a maximum time of 15 minutes to deal with the first aid incident set by the judge(s).

4/
Team captain(s) to be nominated prior to the competition.

5/
All first aid equipment will be provided (bandages etc.) but teams might find it
useful to have a pen and paper handy.

7/
The competition will be assessed on the first aid principles and techniques from the authorised manual of the British Red Cross Society, St. John Ambulance and the St. Andrew’s Ambulance Association (9th edition).

P.S.
Tim has asked us to find two volunteers to act as casualties for the competition. They will require old clothing that may be cut or torn? Would any of our Explorers be willing to do this?

District Camp - Request for Numbers

Over 30 Beavers attended and split into teams to answer general knowledge questions, identify hidden objects and musical scores whilst eating pancakes! We had joint winners with Hoyland A and Darfield A both teams scoring a massive 69! Well done all!

Changes to Scout - Explorer Transfer Age

I thought some of you might be interested in the following correspondence between myself and Headquarters. My email to them was prompted the 'Transition from Scouts to Explorer Scouts'
document circulated via ScoutingPlus on behalf of the Operations Sub-Committee. The gist of the document is that from 1 September 2009 nobody over the age of 14.5 will be able to take part in the Scout Programme. The current position is that there is six months flexibility, so you could keep someone in Scouts until 15.

My words are in black text; the reply from Thomas Ovenstone at HQ is in red text:

Many thanks for your email. I will try to answer your points in order below.

Is no-one even slightly concerned that Scouting is now losing one of its most basic and unique ideas; that young scouts should be lead by older scouts through the Patrol system? For this to work there has to be a reasonable age difference between the young scouts and their PLs and APLs. Any Scout Leader trying to run the Patrol system today is faced with the problem that the 'oldest' scouts are not that much more mature or physically bigger than the kids they are trying to lead. You would struggle to send a patrol of scouts camping on their own today, for example.

You will appreciate that this was a decision that was not taken lightly - there has been significant discussion and debate surrounding this issue before the 'public' statement issued this week. I would argue that it is entirely possible to actively involve older Scouts in a 'Leadership' role within the Troop, as well as encouraging them to take on responsibility for decision making in the wider group and unit. There are many troops who have successfully adapted their programme and the patrol system that they use since 2002 to reflect the change to the core age range of the Section that has been in place since that date. I also know that it is possible for young people to camp as a Patrol with minimal adult supervision - although I do grant you that the system and requirements for doing so have changed over the years.

Is it not one of our USPs, that young people emerge from Scouting having had some leadership experience? It's not good leadership experience being nominally in charge of a group of kids who do exactly as they please despite your best efforts!

I entirely agree with your point that developing leadership skills in young people is one of the most important aspects of Scouting in all of our Sections (you may be aware of the Taking the Lead resource, available from http://www.scouts.org.uk/support_resource_view.php?support_resource_id=1321 which aims to do just that. I believe that it is possible to do this within the current framework of the Scout Section for the reasons outlined above.

I was hoping that on further consideration the age flexibility regarding Explorers would move in the other direction.

All of the evidence that we have collected over the last seven years suggests that the needs of most young people are best met by the provision of a good Balanced Programme for 10-14 year olds in the Scout Section and a similar provision for 14-18 year olds in the Explorer Scout Section. The core age ranges were set as such in 2002 because research had identified that young people often left the movement at around the age of 14, choosing to disengage from the programme offered by their Scout Troop because they felt that it had nothing left to offer them. We also firmly believe (having been told so repeatedly by adults working with both Sections) that allowing 6 months flexibility either side of the core upper age allows enough variance to take into account any personal development factors or the need to move up with a peer group. The additional flexibility (e.g. up to 15) has caused a number of issues over the last seven years and (after repeated requests) we have taken the decision to change the rule for the reasons outlined on the FAQ sheet. It is worth noting in this context that both the Explorer Scout and Scout Sections have experienced significant growth since 2002.

I don't see that there is any inherent problem with 14/15 year olds holding APL and PL positions in the Scout Troop, whilst also being members of the District Explorer unit. Most Scout Troops have weekly meetings and say monthly weekend activities. Explorers tend to hold monthly meetings, with a couple of weekend activities per month.

Is it beyond us to develop a scheme which allows some overlap between Scouts and Explorers? Is it not possible for a 14/15 year old to be an active member of the Troop whilst also working on the Platinum/Bronze award? Would this in fact not ease the transition to Explorers?

I suppose that the most significant problem here is that of the time available to a young person. We know that most Explorer Scout Units meet on a weekly basis as per the demands of their members. It strikes me that it would be very difficult to provide an overlapping system such as you describe in a flexible enough fashion to allow young people to access it. Moreover, I would argue that this is exactly the situation in which the Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Scheme can prove so beneficial.

I'm curious as to what consultation process was undertaken prior to the Operations Sub-Committee issuing this diktat. How many people were consulted? What questions were asked? What replies were received? Can I view the results of the consultation process online? I'm certain I've never been asked for my views on this.

We have not instituted a specific survey with regard to this topic, which is why you will not have seen one. However, since the launch of the Balanced Programme in 2002, the UK Programme Advisory Team have taken great care to collect and log issues regarding programme content and any problems surrounding its delivery. This change was instituted after quite literally thousands of email, telephone and face to face conversations over the last seven years.

I hope that helps to at least explain the thinking behind this change. Apologies for the long email, but I thought that you would appreciate a detailed response to your queries. I would be happy to discuss this matter further should you so wish.

"The Dump" - Old Scouting Books

If you're one of those who remembers Scouting in the 'good old days' you'll enjoy The Dump. It's a website containing scanned images of dozens of old Scouting reference books. If you want a 1950 Patrol Leader's Handbook, you'll find it here, along with Games, Pioneering Projects, Knot books, and so on. It's an excellent resource site for Leaders; you will pick up some good programme ideas. Ignore anything to do with First Aid, as things have moved on a bit since the 1930s. And remember a lot of this stuff pre-dates the concept of health & safety - it's well worth a read just to see the sort of stuff they used to get away with!

I can't help thinking we've lost something along the way. I have to keep reminding myself that nostalgia isn't what it used to be... ...

Other possible events were discussed but not scheduled, subject to further discussion at the District Scouters Meetings. These included:

1) reintroducing the Games Night for Cubs/Scouts
2) Backwoods/Survival weekend for Scouts
3) Pioneering Badge for Scouts
4) Water Activities weekend for Scouts

We also agreed to try and differentiate the programme for 12/13 year old scouts to try and improve retention.

Scout Challenge

The Explorers have invited older Cubs and Scouts (10 to 14 years old) to a series of challenges at Silverwood Scout camp, on Saturday 17th November, commencing 10am finishing at 5pm. Groups are invited to enter teams of five persons at a cost of £1 per person. Additional persons may make up a ‘district team’ to avoid disappointment.

Cubs and Scouts will need their own packed lunch; free hot drinks will be provided throughout the day.

So far, not many groups have replied with the number of 10-14 year olds who will be attending.

If you are interested in taking part can you please let Chris know, so he can work out how many activities to prepare!

Also on 17 November, and following on from the Scout Challenge, everyone involved in Fitzwilliam Scouting is invited to a District bonfire event starting at 6pm. Hot dogs and hot drinks will be for sale. Groups will be expected to perform a campfire stunt/song and may put on a stall etc, the sale of any goods going to that Group. A trophy will be given to the Beaver group that brings/makes the best Bonfire Guy. (The Beaver Challenge Trophy) Fireworks will not be allowed, in compliance with Health & Safety. Sparklers will only be allowed under careful adult supervision.

Could all Groups let Chris know whether you whether you will be taking part in this event and what table(s) you hope to put on to raise funds.

Thanks a lot to all the Beaver Leaders in the District who brought their Beavers along to the campfire at Ardsley tonight. We didn't let the rain spoil our fun. We had a real fire and hotdogs, pop and buns mixed in with a lot of songs and yells. And... Alan was early!

Spooktacular 2007

Details of this year's Spooktacular at Hesley Wood have been released. It's October 20th, 5.30 to 9.30pm. The cost is £4.50 per child, and £1 per adult. It's fancy dress and the theme this year is wizards, witches and warlocks. Booking via 0114 246 7912.

We went last year, and I have to say I was quite impressed. Just be aware that quite a lot of the event takes place outdoors, for example there was a ghostwalk round the woods. The only criticism I had of last year was that one of the bases took place in the tuck shop in a fairly transparent attempt to get the kids to pester their parents for money, but that aside it was a good event; well worth going.

A great weekend at SYnergise

The SYnergise camp at Hesley Wood was a huge success, with about 1500 campers from all over South Yorkshire enjoying the fun and games! Around 100 kids from the Barnsley Fitzwilliam District joined in the Centenary Celebrations, and we all enjoyed camping, cooking, and playing together as a District.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who was involved in the organisation of this event… we all saw an awful lot of smiling faces throughout the weekend (kids and adults alike), which made it all worthwhile.

Here we all were after a bit of 100-year-old birthday cake!!

District Meeting - 20 November

Highlight of the meeting was undoubtedly the pie and peas which were most excellent, so thanks to Barry and Keith for organising that.

What else did we learn? Well Hoyland are in danger of becoming insufferably smug about winning everything so the rest of us are going to have to try that little bit harder at future events.

There will be more races for Explorers at next year's swimming gala. Now we just need to make sure there are more Explorers for races! I'm actually quite worried about Explorers - it seems to be imploding - does anyone fancy having a separate meeting to try and put an Explorer programme together?

The Synergise Camp is not where I thought it was. There is a meeting at Hesley Wood on Friday 1st December at 7.30pm for those interested in helping to organise it. Given that the budget for this event is about £90,000 (2000 x £45), I think we should go along and make sure it's well spent.

CRB Forms - the ongoing saga - I think we eventually decided that Groups should hand in a control sheet with their CRBs (e.g. Group, Name, Form number), so Steve can let GSLs know when he gets the OK from HQ. I promise not to raise the subject again - though in fairness I didn't raise it last night.

I'll let someone else blog the Jamboree stuff, of which there was quite a bit.

The Silverwood Development Committee (?) is looking at various options for buildings, outbuildings, shelters, etc., and for improving security. Don't know about anyone else, but I felt there could have been more consultation on this, especially as for one reason or another our District representatives haven't been able to attend the meetings.

It was good to see Ann Oxley at the meeting again - it is starting to feel as though we're finally making real progress on the training side.

If I'm not very much mistaken it looks like the team behind the Apex Challenge is going to be involved in organising it, which bodes very well for the event. Aviation Show, 2/3 December

The Sports & Leisure Aviation Show is taking place at the NEC Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd December 2006 (see www.sportaviation.org.uk). The show is the UK's biggest indoor show covering the whole spectrum of lightweight sports flying/paragliding, etc. To show it's commitment to young people, the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA), one of the joint sponsors, has thrown open the show doors to members of the Scout Association. Under 16s will get free admission provided they turn up in uniform or have some sort of ID with them. There will also be an information stand on the various Scout Parascending Clubs and the new Scout Parascending Badge, as well as an small flying aircraft built jointly between Explorer Scouts & Air Cadets in sections in various parts of the UK.

As an added bonus, in one of the adjacent Halls at the NEC (3a), the International Flightsim Convention (IFC) is being held, which is of course all about PC based Flight Simulation, Virtual Airlines etc. See http://ifcglobalnetwork.com/europe/. Microsoft is one of the main sponsors.The IFC show organisers have just made contact and have offered a reduced entrance fee to any Scout Association members in uniform for only £3 compared to the £8 (public under 16 charge).

Spooktacular

This event at Hesley Wood on 21st October was well worth attending. It was for Cubs and Leaders/parents and only cost £4 for the kids and £1 for the adults. The staff, Fellowship and volunteers did a brilliant job of organising ghost walks (the woods were full of werewolves, ghosts, ghouls and men with chainsaws), spooky craft activities, outdoor spooky activities, apple bobbing, a Date with Death, and too many other activities to mention. A spooky panto was enjoyed before burgers and juice served alongside worms in mud for dessert. There was also a chocolate fountain to share. The evening was rounded off with a short campfire which was lit by a witch descending from the trees. The heavy rain did not dampen the spirits of the Cubs, who for the most part were dressed in spectacularly spooky costumes. If you get the chance to go next year you will have a fun night.

District Meeting - 6 October

Random jottings from last night's District Meeting:

Cross-country (this coming weekend) is 12.30 meet for 1pm kick-off. Start-time for the Swimming Competition has been changed; it's now 5pm for 5.30pm start, 30 minutues earlier than previously blogged.

County is holding a "Synergy" Camp at Wentworth Woodhouse, 4-7 May 2007. It's £45p/p plus food for the weekend so it promises to be a very exclusive affair. General feeling at the meeting was that it's a good idea but it's far too expensive and for that reason I don't thing many of us will be going - County personages please take note!

Ann Oxley gave us the latest training news and a report from the National Conference, including our latest paedophile-proof appointment process, which seems to revolve around the fact that said paedophiles fear the number three. Sounded like nonsense to me, but what do I know.

Speaking of processes that give a false sense of security, we had a chat about the merits of asking all parents to fill in a CRB form when their kids join so you're covered if they subsequently help out. Personally I think it's a waste of time, but if you do do it, bear in mind that the forms are only considered valid for three years. I think a more pressing issue is how GSLs know when the process is complete - at the moment we don't get anything back to say the individual concerned has been cleared.

Seemingly the much-hyped new adult training programme which, if memory serves, is supposed to make it easier attract new leaders, is proving so intimidating that we are advised to recruit helpers rather than assistant leaders so we can put off having to raise the training issue until they've settled in. No-one saw that one coming did they?

Sunrise Festival: The search goes on to find something to do at 8am on the morning of 1st August next year to publicly celebrate 100 years of Scouting. To complicate things the day in question is a Wednesday - what do you mean you have to go to work? For example, I happen to know that all the Cornish scouts are gathering at dawn to watch the sun come up at the Eden Project. So what, we need to ask ourselves, is our Eden Project? Our iconic landmark? And when you think about it it just has to be Stairfoot Roundabout!

From 1st January 2007 all Scout Groups are required to admit girls who ask to join. We are officially co-ed. Up to now it's been left to individual Groups to decide.

Naturally by the time we'd finished talking about the above, it was 10 o'clock, so no time to discuss anything that might actually be useful. The idea of Scouting Skills training for leaders and helpers, was briefly discussed, but no action was agreed. We really do need to do something about the balance of these meetings. We spend far to much time talking about inconsequential matters and not enough time talking about what we are going to do in our district for our kids.

For those who do need training you can do: Modules 5-9 on 11 November; Modules 11-15+19 on 17/18 February, and; Module 16 (Nights Away) on 19/20 May or 14/15 September. All these at Hesleywood. You can get more details from Ann.

Beaver Campfire - Ardsley

Can you make sure your Beavers know one or two campfire songs please - particularly Camp Fire's Burning otherwise it's just Leaders singing. We'll do the usual Alice the Camel, When I was One, Everywhere we go, Tarzan of the Apes. Ham n Eggs, Old MacDonald Had A ( very unusual) Farm, Grand Old Duke of York etc. plus I thought we'd start with a game this year. Staged Activity Badges

Two new staged Activity Badges have been announced: the Hikes Away badge and the Emergency Aid badge. Like the other staged badges you can start working for these badges in Beavers. The Nights Away badge has also been updated.

Hikes Away: There are 6 badges to collect after 1, 5, 10, 20, 35 and 50 hikes. Guidelines are given for the difficulty of the hikes, which should reflect the age of the kids.

Emergency Aid: The section activity badges have been discontinued in favour of a five-stage badge. Stage 1 is relatively easy, Stage 5 is equivalent to a full first aid qualification.

Nights Away: This is now a 12-stage badge, awarded after 1, 5, 10, 20, 35, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 nights under canvas. The highest award was for 50 nights previously.

South Yorkshire Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Rainbows & Brownies, with their Leaders (or parents), are invited to Winter Wonderland, which will be held at Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd December, 2pm to 6pm each day. The cost is £5 per child and £1 per adult. The activities, which are all free, will include: Santa’s Grotto (where each child receives a present from Santa), a Winter Wonderland Trail, Christmas Campfire, Christmas Crafts, Write a letter to Santa (& receive a reply!) and roundabouts. High Ropes Course

West Yorkshire is running a high ropes course for new instructors on the 14-15th October and 4-5th November. The course is open to anyone BUT you must have the nerve to go on the course so you can do the rescues.

Booster Seats

I initially thought this was a good idea - but that's when I thought it was a method of ejecting kids who get chocolate on your car seats. Apparently it's a bit more sinister than that. Seemingly our government (hereinafter referred to as Nanny) has run out of real problems to tackle and has turned its legislative eye to finding new and imaginitive ways of making scouting impossible. I feel a bit of a rant coming on. Not content with a torrent of health and safety legislation which is fast on the way to making anything even slightly risky illegal, and a child protection policy which involves letting a few hundred known paedophiles wander the streets freely and then subjecting every adult in the country to an intrusive police check if they even attempt get involved with kids so they can find them again, it seems we now run the risk of prosecution if we carry kids in cars without an appropriate child seat, this notwithstanding the fact that the occupants of cars have never been safer!

And relax.... Anyway, according to Nanny if you carry any under-12s who also happen to be under 4ft5ins (which let's face it is quite likely) they must be sat on a proper booster seat, otherwise the police are quite entitled to stop and shoot you.

Seemingly, according to draft legislation I've seen, arm bands will be compulsory at next year's swimming competition; stabilisers will be required at the cyclocross; and real grass will be officially classed as a slip hazard so camping will only be permitted on astroturf.

Swimming Gala - 11 November

This year's swimming competition will take place on Saturday 11th November. Doors open at 5.30pm for registration, and the competition proper starts at 6.00pm, and ends at 8.00pm, with competitive events for Cubs, Scouts and Explorers as usual. Beavers swim between 5.30pm and 6.30pm - no dams please.

Cross Country - 15 October

There will be races for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, and a special event for people with bionic legs. This is a Metro event, but I can't remember who gets what. Games Competition - Postponed

Revised Post: This year Cubs and Scouts will earn points by competing as teams in different games, for example, Giant Jenga, Giant Kerplunk, Giant Connect4 (spotted the theme yet?) Rather than the usual contemplative silence, we're going for noisy and chaotic. Each Group is invited to enter a team of 4 cubs, and a team of 4 Scouts.

Welcome Back

I hope you all had a good Summer. Apologies that the blog's taken a back seat for a while, but I will try and update it more regularly now. I believe our next get-together is the District Scouters Meeting on 14th September at Ardsley. Kick-off is at 7.30pm and it's cub night so we'll be in the Burgin Room.

Other events that I'm vaguely aware of are Games Competition, 19th September at Ardsley (probably need to give that one some thought!) , Cross Country Competition on 15th October, and Swimming Competition on 11th November. There's also the Apex Extreme event which I've blogged separately below.

Apex Extreme Challenge

Entries have opened for the Apex Extreme Challenge for Explorer Scouts. The dates are Friday 13 - Sunday 15 October and the event will take place in and around Castleton. As usual it's teams of four, and I know some of us struggle to round up that many Explorers, but it's a great event so perhaps we could put two or three teams in as a District?

2007 Jamboree

Great news. Fitzwilliam District has had 5 young people chosen to attend the Centenary Jamboree in Essex. They are Craig Reaney and Adam Craven from Darfield Scout Group, Kieran Jones and Nathan Taylor from Wombwell Scout Group and Dale McNamara from Hoyland Scout Group. Their first training camp is on the weekend of 7 - 9 July (same weekend as District Camp, but, never mind)

The cost for each of them is approaching £1000 so there will need to be a great deal of fundraising going on over the next 6 months. Some ideas have already been put forward but if you can suggest good money spinners then let us know. Watch this space for further information.

Fellowship is running a District Challenge for Scouts on Saturday 8th, from 10.30am - 4.30pm. Beavers can stay for camp fire on Saturday night but only if accompanied by an adult.

Adult Recruitment: General agreement to work together to address the lack of adult volunteers, and to run more joint activities for Scouts/Explorers to get round the shortage of adults with activity authorisations. A recruitment night is being organised at Ardsley for September.

Jamboree: Mick is going to blog the Jamboree build up for us. The Exec will be asked to fund part of the cost for the three district participants from the Jamboree Fund.

The Kinder Walk - 17th September

The Kinder Walk is a challenging walk in the Peak District aimed at older Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Network, Guides and Leaders. The walk, which takes place on part of Kinder Scout, is approximately 29km (18 Miles). The event is being organised by the South Yorkshire Activities Team and costs £25.00 for a team of 3 or 4, or £18.00 for a team of 2. The event is open to members of the Scout or Guide Associations aged over 13 years. Teams may have two, three or four members. You can download a .pdf application form from here.

Beaver Activity Day

This was a fun, activity packed day at Silverwood for 39 Beavers from the District. Decorating buns, card making, fridge magnets, healthy eating bases inside and tie dying (one Beaver asked when it would be his turn to go sky diving!) outside in the sunshine, along with a treasure hunt contributed to the fun. Then there was time to make new friends with a play in the field and even a campfire. Sven phoned from Germany to ask what all the noise was! Just time for hotdogs before looking at the collage we made and then home. A grand day for everyone. We are already making plans to do it all again at Christmas so if anyone has any ideas please pass them on. Also, we were thinking of a District pantomime visit - maybe at Wombwell. Watch this blog.

I have spoken with CC Steve CLAPHAM today about the lack of training. He is fully supportive and has been trying to place pressure on the County Trainer (to no avail). However he accepts there should be more communincation between the county & the 'front end minnions'. Will things improve???

DC does a Tony Blair

At the AGM last night Steve Marcroft announced his intention to step down as DC to concentrate on other things; but not yet. He hinted that this was part of (or might hasten) the 'bigger picture' restructuring of the districts within Barnsley that's been on the cards for some time.

Driving a Minibus

Were you aware that anyone who passed their driving test after 1997 (e.g. 27 year olds and under) will not automatically have the D1 group on their licence, which they need to allow them to drive a minibus? I’ve been quoted £600 to obtain the qualification you need before you can apply for the D1 group to be added to a licence. This includes a driving assessment, training, theory test, and ministry test. The whole process involves a time commitment of 4/5 days. Does anyone know any cheaper or quicker way of getting round this (legally)?

Jamboree Opportunities

County is seeking 4 Scouters to be part of the support team for the South Yorkshire Jamboree contingent. A Leader Selection Night will take place on 13th June at Hesley Wood, and applicants also need to be available 7th-9th July for a training weekend. Closing date for applications is 5th June 2006. AGM & Adult Recruitment

This week's District Annual General Meeting will be followed by a discussion on how we can get more adults involved in Scouting in our area. The subject was raised at the last District meeting and there was general agreement that lack of adult leaders and helpers is the biggest issue most Groups have. Hopefully this week's meeting will see the start of a coordinated effort to tackle the problem.

Cub Football

It's the District Cub Football Competition on Saturday 13th May. Meet at Elsecar Cricket Club for a 10am start. Expect to finish around noon. Each Group can enter 2 teams of 5 but can play as many subs as needed. All Cubs who turn up will get a game whether they can play like Rooney or not! Can last years' winning Group bring the trophy with them please.

Update: Alas the weather intervened and this event was cancelled. Does anyone know if it is being re-run? If so, let me know and I'll re-post the details.

Update: I understand there's a possibility of this event being re-run on 10th June, however this is unconfirmed.

Centenary Camp, May 2007

As part of the centenary celebrations County is organising a Join-in-Centenary celebration camp for the bank holiday weekend of 4-7 May 2007 at Wentworth Deer Park (3 miles from Hesley Wood). It is anticipated that 1,500 campers and 500 day visitors will attend.

A first “ideas” meeting is being held at Hesley Wood on Wednesday 24th May at 7.30pm (in the fellowship building). DCs, ADCs, activity people, crafts folk, adventurers, and anyone who has ideas on activities are invited to attend.

Volleyball Challenge

Does anyone fancy a game of Volleyball? We have an outdoor volleyball set and would be happy to run a Volleyball event, either as a district competition or joint activity. We normally play with between 6 and 8 Scouts to a team. We just need an area of flat grass about the size of a tennis court. If you're interested, get in touch.

Scuba Diving

This Saturday 10 Ardsley Scouts took part in a Scuba Diving taster session at Chapletown baths, under the expert supervision of South Yorkshire Diving Academy. The feedback from the kids was excellent. Cost is £10 per person, and for that you get a safety briefing and about an hour's instruction in the pool. If you fancy something a bit different, I recommend it. You can contact SYDA via their website. Ask for Donna.

Cub Antics, 1st/2nd July 2006

To celebrate the 90th birthday of Cub Scouts, County is holding an event at Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre in Chapeltown. Cubs and Leaders can attend on either Saturday 1st July or Sunday 2nd July between 10.00am and 4.00pm. There will be bases covering things like music making, circus skills, magic, crafts, dressing up and all the usual activities such as Climbing, Obstacle course, Aerial runway, camp fires and a children only Pit Stop. The cost is £10 for Cubs - Leaders come free! More information available from County Office (www.syscouts.org.uk). Closing date for bookings is 30 April.

Cub Walk, Darfield

I reckon about 40 cubs from around the District took part in yesterday's cub walk (they were playing tigs when I was trying to count them). It was a lovely evening. The circular walk started at Darfield HQ and took us to Broomhill, back along the river to the Bridge Inn, and back via the Church, a distance of about 2 1/2 miles. All the kids enjoyed it. Thanks to Darfield for organising the event.

I've taken the liberty of posting a generic ad for Leaders, Assistant Leaders, and Helpers for our District on two volunteering websites www.do-it.org.uk and www.idealist.org. I'll field any email enquiries they generate - see, ever hopeful! - and put them in touch with the nearest Group. I had an email exchange with HQ last week and they said they'd had some success using the do-it website. If anyone knows of any more sites like these let me know - we may as well be listed as not, provided it's free.

St. George's Day Parade, Elsecar

Mixed feelings about this year's St George's Day parade. On the plus side it was a nice day for a parade, and the County Commissioner Steve Clapham (previously our District Commissioner) attended. On a sad note it marked the official demise of Elsecar Scout Group which closed last year: their flags were laid to rest in the church. Elsecar joins a growing list of Groups closing due to a lack of adult helpers - in recent years we've lost Bolton-on-Dearne, Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe. It underlined, for me, the importance and urgency of setting up a District Recruitment Team to try and bring more adults into Scouting.

Blogging Experiment

This my first ever post to a blog. I'm wondering whether we can use blogging to bring leaders in our District together, improve communication and collaboration, speed up decision making, and generally drag Scouting in this area into the twenty-first century. To be honest I'm not hopeful. There are many in our District who haven't cottoned onto email yet! Still it's worth a try. This is going to be a members only blog. At least for now, 'til I get the hang of it. If you're a Leader or Adult Helper and you'd like to be a member let me know.
